Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to pull away from visiting Henderson State Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena as they remained in third place in the Gulf South Conference West Division standings.
After an evenly-matched first half, the Bucs (13-5, 3-2 GSC West) were on the verge of pulling away earlier in the second half as an 11-2 run put them ahead 49-39 with 14:44 remaining, but two Lance Smith free throws and a Kyle Oldham three cut the margin right back to five points.
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) started the decisive run for the Bucs with a baseline jumper with 11:14 remaining in the game. He sank a pair of free throws two minutes later, and freshman
Alex Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) buried a three-pointer and a fast-break layup on consecutive possessions to put the Bucs ahead 60-46 with 7:55 remaining. The Reddies (7-11, 0-5) never came closer than 11 points again.
Warner scored a game-high 26 for the Bucs to go with six assists and two blocks.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) turned in another double-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists, while Rogers scored a career-best eight points off the bench with
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) in foul trouble much of the night.
Smith led the Reddies with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Tommy Tillman scored 13, while Darnei Bates added 11.
The Bucs shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47), their second-highest mark of the season, from the floor, but they were just 25 percent (3-of-12) from three-point range. The Reddies were 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the floor.
HSU out-rebounded the Bucs 29-28, but the Bucs forced 12 turnovers while committing five.
The Bucs return to action Thursday night as they visit Southern Arkansas at 7:30 p.m. The come home next Saturday to host top-ranked Arkansas Tech at 4 p.m.
