PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored three second-half goals to advance to their first Gulf South Conference championship game since 2000 with a 3-0 win over Ouachita Baptist Friday in Pensacola, Fla.
After a scoreless first half, the Bucs (9-8-1) scored the only goal they would need in the 58th minute as
Michael Hollier (Lafayette, La./Teurlings HS) collected a loose ball near the goal line and passed to
Samuel Chun (Quito, Ecuador/Ari Pinto das Nevis) at the top of the 18-yard box. Chun's rocket found the corner of the net to put the Bucs on top.
The Bucs put it away with a pair of goals four minutes apart late in the half. In the 80th minute,
Gideon Leteyian (Namanga, Kenya/Kiluani New Life Secondary School) chased down a long pass, dodged a pair of defenders, and found the net for the Bucs' second goal.
Alex Bermel (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) put it out of reach in the 84th minute with another goal.
For the game, the Bucs out-shot Ouachita Baptist (11-6) 19-12, with an 8-3 lead in shots on goal.
The Bucs advance to the finals for the first time since 2000, when they beat Alabama-Huntsville 2-1 in double overtime They won 3-0 in the finals over Montevallo that year.
The Bucs will play Sunday at 1 p.m. against top-seeded West Florida, who rolled to a 5-0 win over Alabama-Huntsville in the second semifinal.
