Bucs' Defense Rewrites Record Books in 45-30 Win

Scott Dennis scored 14 points and grabbed 20 rebounds as the Bucs won 45-30 over West Alabama Saturday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs rewrote both schools' record books in a 45-30 win over West Alabama Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena, setting a CBU school record for fewest points allowed as well as a UWA record for fewest points scored.

The Bucs (9-2) never allowed the West Alabama (3-5) offense to find any rhythm, holding them to just 24.1 percent (13-of-54) from the floor as they kept UWA 45 points below their season average.

After a sluggish start of their own, the Bucs settled down late in the first half and took control with a 19-5 run over a nine-minute stretch, extending an 8-7 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the half to 27-12 on a Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) free throw with 1:48 remaining in the half.

In the second half, the Bucs' offensive struggles returned as UWA trimmed the lead to 32-24 on a Marino Thompson layup with 14:51 remaining, but the Bucs clamped down defensively again, only allowing a a pair of three-pointers in the final 20 Tiger possessions.  On the other end, the Bucs began to stretch the lead out again as a Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) three-point play sparked a 7-0 run before Ibrahim Appiah's three-pointer with 8:08 remaining cut the lead to 39-27.  They found three straight buckets in the paint to take a 45-27 lead before Alquan Mendenhall drained a three-pointer with 49 seconds remaining to set the final margin.

Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) paced the Bucs with 14 points and a season-best 20 rebounds as well as four assists and two blocks.  Warner added 14.  Alex Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills HS) scored six points but dominated the game on the other end, holding Mendenhall, who entered the game averaging 18.9 ppg, to just six points on 2-of-8 shooting, setting season-lows for field goals, attempts, and percentage.

Richard Dixon led the Tigers with seven points.  Mendenhall and Marino Thompson scored six each.

In addition to 24.1 percent shooting overall, the Bucs limited UWA to 13.6 percent (3-of-22) from three-point range.  CBU was 35.7 percent (15-of-42) overall, but they shot 76.5 percent (13-of-17) at the free throw line.  The Bucs out-rebounded UWA 43-31.

The Bucs wrap up their pre-Christmas schedule next Saturday at 4 p.m. as they host Blue Mountain.
