No. 14 Bucs Finish Well in 61-50 Win at HSU

Scott Dennis scored 19 points with 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks in the Bucs' 61-50 win at Henderson State.
Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The No. 14 Christian Brothers University Bucs out-scored host Henderson State 24-12 over the final 9:15 on their way to a 61-50 win as they picked up their second straight road win in Gulf South Conference West Division play.

The Bucs (14-3, 2-1 GSC West) led throughout the first half despite shooting just 28.6 percent (8-of-28) for the half.  They built a 16-9 lead on a Connor Wetzel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming HS) layup with 10:40 remaining in the half before going cold, allowing the Reddies (5-10, 0-3) to pull within 24-21 on a Lucas Whisenhunt three-pointer just before halftime.

Whisenhunt's three was part of a 13-2 run that lifted HSU to a 29-26 lead with 17:00 remaining on a Jonathan Simms layup.  The next seven minutes were back-and-forth with two ties and six lead changes before a Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) jumper started the decisive run.  Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) followed with a layup, and a Warner three-point play pushed the lead to 44-38.  After a pair of quick HSU layups, four Dennis free throws and a Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) three-pointer pushed the lead back to 51-42, and the Reddies came no closer than seven points again.

Dennis scored a game-high 19 points, making 10-of-11 free throws, and he grabbed 10 rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.  Warner scored 12, and McArthy added 10.  Wetzel scored eight.

Josh French led HSU with 17 points and six rebounds.

After shooting 42.1 percent (8-of-19) in the second half, the Bucs shot just 34.0 percent (16-of-47) for the game as a whole, to the Reddies' 52.5 percent (21-of-40).  HSU was only the second team this season to shoot 50 percent against the Bucs.

The Bucs overcame poor shooting from the field by shooting 83.3 percent (25-of-30) from the free throw line, setting a season-high in free throws made.  HSU out-rebounded the Bucs 29-27, but CBU held a 9-4 edge in offensive rebounds and a 17-7 edge in turnovers.

The Bucs return to Arkadelphia Thursday night at 8 p.m. as they visit Ouachita Baptist before returning home next Saturday at 4 p.m. to face Harding.
