Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs wasted no time putting the 2011-12 season in the record books, setting three school records in a 77-63 win in the opener against Williams Baptist Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles (1-2) opened the game on a 9-2 run, but the Bucs (1-0) stormed back with a 20-4 run, sparked by a
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) three-pointer and capped when a
Stephen Duckett (Memphis, Tenn./Bishop Byrne HS) putback layup with 8:25 remaining in the first half put the Bucs ahead 22-13. The Eagles cut the lead back to 22-21, but a
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) steal and fastbreak dunk sparked a 17-2 run carrying into the second half that put the game out of reach.
The Bucs shot a school-record 43 three-pointers in the game, eclipsing the previous record of 40 three-point attempts set in 2005, also against Williams Baptist. The Bucs also tied both the team and individual marks for blocked shots in a game. The team total of 11 matched the record initially set against LeMoyne-Owen in 2000, and
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) blocked six shots to tie the mark held by Kenneth Blake against Lambuth in 1995 and Matt Francis against Central State in 2001.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) paced the Bucs with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in 31 minutes. McArthy added 12 points and four assists, while
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) and Casey added 10 each.
Kyle Harvey scored a game-high 21 points for the Eagles, and Zabian Sanders tacked on 12.
The Bucs shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) overall, including 34.9 percent (15-of-43) from three-point range. Their 15 three-pointers made tied for eighth in school history for three-pointers in a game. The Eagles shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) overall and 40 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range. The Bucs out-rebounded the Eagles 36-32 and forced 16 turnovers while committing 13.
The Bucs return to action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Harding.
