Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs used a 13-1 run late in the game to pull away from visiting Harding as they beat the Bisons 69-62 Tuesday night at Canale Arena.
While the Bucs (2-0) never trailed, the game stayed close throughout. The Bucs threatened to pull away late in the first half, when a
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) three-pointer sparked a 9-2 run that gave the Bucs a 27-16 lead when
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) knocked down a jumper with 2:56 remaining in the half. The Bisons (0-1) clawed back into the game as Bradley Spencer scored seven straight points on two layups and a triple.
After the Bisons cut the CBU lead to 36-35, Green and
Pat Graham (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) knocked down a pair of threes as part of an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to 44-35, but Harding came right back with a 9-1 run to cut the lead to 45-44. After a McArthy three, Harding's Lance Cannon cut the CBU lead to 48-46 with 6:49 to play. From there, Warner took over the game, sparking the decisive run. He scored six straight points to push the lead to 54-46 with 4:43 remaining. A
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) three followed by back-to-back layups from
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and Green capped the run, giving the Bucs a 61-47 lead with 3:10 remaining, their biggest lead of the night. The Bisons never came closer than six again.
Warner scored a game-high 23 points with five rebounds, while Green scored 16. Dennis delivered a versatile performance, with 10 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and two blocks in 31 minutes.
Spencer led the Bisons with 21 points, and DeAntra Scott added 18.
The Bucs shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) for the game, to the Bisons' 45.3 percent (24-of-53). The Bucs shot 82.4 percent (14-of-17) at the free throw line, however, to the Bisons' 45.5 percent (5-of-11). The Bucs out-rebounded the Bisons 38-26, with both teams committing 12 turnovers.
The Bucs play their next three games on the road, beginning this weekend as they face Shaw and Cincinnati-Clermont in the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic at Northern Kentucky University. They visit Arkansas Tech next Tuesday before coming home Tuesday, Nov. 29, to face Arkansas Tech.
