Box Score MEMPHIS—No. 15 Arkansas Tech held the Christian Brothers University Bucs scoreless from the field for over seven minutes late in the second half as part of a 16-1 run to put them ahead, and they held on for a 64-61 win Tuesday night at Canale Arena.
The Bucs (4-2) led for most of the game, building a 10-3 early lead on a
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) triple with 15:25 remaining in the half. Midway through the second half, they threatened to pull away when back-to-back buckets by
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) and
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) lifted them to a 48-40 lead, their biggest of the night. But as happened in the previous three meetings, ATU guard Johnie Davis took over the game, scoring 12 of his game-high 25 points during the decisive run and assisting on one of the other two baskets. Davis made two threes, two fastbreak layups, and two free throws during the run.
The Bucs appeared on the ropes with a 60-52 deficit into the last minute, but a
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) three-point play with 26.5 seconds to play gave them a spark of life, cutting the margin to 60-55. After a Will Paul free throw,
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) nailed a three-pointer with 16 seconds remaining. Davis scored a quick layup off the inbounds pass, but another Dennis trey with 2.6 seconds remaining cut the margin to 63-61. After Jared Williamson made the first of two free throws with 1.1 seconds to play, he missed the second intentionally, and the Bucs called timeout with .8 seconds remaining as Warner grabbed the rebound. Casey's 60-foot shot at the buzzer missed to the right to end the game.
Warner led the Bucs with 20 points and four blocks to go with eight rebounds. Dennis scored 11 points with 10 rebounds and six assists, while Green scored 11.
Davis added four assists and three steals to his 25 points, and Paul scored 20 with five rebounds and two blocks. Matt Haney scored 14, knocking down four three-pointers.
The Bucs committed 20 turnovers for the second straight game after committing 23 at ATU last week. They had not committed 20 turnovers in consecutive games since committing 20-plus turnovers at West Alabama and at North Alabama in December 2005.
The Bucs shot 39.2 percent (20-of-51), including 37 percent (10-of-27) from three-point range. The Wonder Boys shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) overall and 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from three-point range. The Bucs out-rebounded ATU 36-30 and blocked eight shots.
The Bucs play six of their next seven games on the road, beginning with a trip to Harding next Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. Their final home game of 2011 will be Saturday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m. against Central Baptist.
