Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla.—After 110 scoreless minutes, the No. 9 Christian Brothers University Bucs won the Gulf South Conference championship over West Florida 5-4 in penalty kicks, the Bucs' first GSC crown since 2000.
For both teams, the best scoring chance came early. In the 13th minute, GSC Freshman of the Year
Jose Ferraz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) ripped a shot that hit the right post and bounced harmlessly away, keeping the Bucs (15-3-1) off the scoreboard. Just over five minutes later, it was the Argos (9-6-3) who were denied by the woodwork as Dillon Gallet's shot hit the crossbar but bounced away.
From there, both teams' defenses stood tall, with only five shots on goal in 110 minutes. UWF held a 13-9 edge in total shots, but the Bucs took a 3-2 edge in shots on goal.
After the overtimes ended scoreless, a penalty kick shootout determined the champion. Senior goalkeeper
Daniel Johnson (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS) subbed into the game with just under three minutes remaining to put him in position to face the penalties. In the third round, Johnson made the save on Junior Prevalus.
Yannick Skull (Adelaide, Australia/Woodcroft College),
Tony Aloia (Hallsville, Texas/Hallsville HS),
David Skull (Adelaide, Australia/Woodcroft College), and
Ralph Velasco (Rowlett, Texas/Rowlett HS) converted the first four penalties for the Bucs, putting Ferraz in position to deliver the trophy. The GSC's top scorer this season scored on the penalty kick, giving the Bucs their first conference championship in 11 years.
Ferraz was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, and he was joined on the All-Tournament team by goalkeeper
Jaime Garcia (San Salvador, El Salvador/Lincoln School) and defenders
Sean Rutter (Bristol, England/Filton College) and
David Skull (Adelaide, Australia/Woodcroft College).
The conference championship is the fifth in school history. The Bucs won the GSC title in 2000, and they won TCAC championships in 1992, 1993, and 1994.
