Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs trailed for nearly the whole first half, but a 15-2 run in less than five minutes put them ahead for good as they pulled away to an 81-62 win over Central Oklahoma Saturday in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic.
The Bronchos (7-6) controlled the game early on, opening a 13-5 lead on a Brent Friday layup with 15:08 remaining. After trading baskets much of the first half, they expanded their lead to 32-23 on a Friday three-point play with 4:47 remaining in the first half. The Bucs (7-2) began their comeback with a pair of
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) free throws, and the first of a career-high five triples from
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) cut the lead back to four points. After Friday scored again, Warner answered with another bucket. Layups from
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) and
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) tied the game at 34 with a minute remaining in the first half, and a pair of Dennis free throws with less than a second remaining in the first half put the Bucs ahead for the first time. Warner capped the run with another jumper to start the second half.
Dennis and Warner combined for another three-minute burst a few minutes later to help the Bucs pull away. After the lead had been trimmed to 40-37, Warner sank a triple with 17:59 remaining in the game to push the lead to six. A pair of Dennis free throws were answered by a Friday free throw. The 11-1 run was capped by two more Dennis triples, putting the Bucs on top 51-38 with 14:45 remaining. They would steadily build their lead to as many as 26 points in the final minutes of the game.
Warner scored a season-high 28 with six assists, while Dennis had season-highs of 21 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists.
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) scored 11, and Casey added 10.
The Bucs shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) for the game, including 66.7 percent (16-of-24) in the second half. They were 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from three-point range and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) at the free throw line. The Bucs held UCO to 46.2 percent (24-of-52) overall. UCO out-rebounded the Bucs 29-25, but they committed 15 turnovers to the Bucs' 12.
The Bucs take on St. Mary's University of San Antonio, Texas, tomorrow at 6 p.m. Their next home game will be Thursday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m. against West Alabama.
