Box Score SEARCY, Ark.—In a game of big runs for each team, the Christian Brothers University Bucs used both the biggest run and the last run to pick up a key South Region road win Tuesday night, topping Harding 72-60.
The Bisons (4-2) jumped ahead first, using a 15-5 burst to take a 17-7 lead on back-to-back Demoine Brown layups with 10:54 remainign in the first half. The Bucs (5-2) dominated the rest of the half, ending it with a 27-9 run started by a
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) three-pointer and ended by a three-pointer and then three free throws from
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) to put the Bucs ahead 34-26.
After Harding cut the lead back to 47-40 with 11:00 remaining, the Bucs appeared to put the game away with an 8-0 run.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) sank a three,
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) followed with a layup, and Dennis scored a three-point play to push the lead to 55-40 with 7:16 to play. Then, the Bisons answered with a furious run of their own, with a 15-2 burst trimming the lead to 57-55 on a Bradley Spencer three with just 3:16 remaining.
After each team failed to score on the next possession, Dennis found McArthy for a key three-pointer with 2:01 remaining. After a Harding free throw, Green scored a quick layup to extend the lead to 62-56 with 1:39 remaining, and the Bucs were 8-of-9 from the charity stripe in the final minute and a half to stretch the lead back out, with a Green fastbreak dunk putting the exclamation point on the victory in the final seconds.
Dennis and Green tied for game-high honors in scoring with 18 points each, and Dennis added 11 rebounds and six assists for his third double-double of the season. McArthy tacked on 13 points, and Casey scored nine.
Zach Roddenberry led the Bisons with 18 points, and DeAntra Scott added 13.
The Bucs shot 44.2 percent (23-of-52) overall to the Bisons' 45.7 percent (21-of-46). They made up the difference at the three-point line, shooting 39.1 percent (9-of-23) to the Bisons' 28.6 percent (4-of-14), and at the free throw line, where they shot 85 percent (17-of-20) to Harding's 70 percent (14-of-20). The Bucs out-rebounded Harding 29-25 and forced 12 turnovers while committing 11.
The Bucs play their final home game of 2011 Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against Central Baptist before playing their next five games on the road, starting with two games in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas Dec. 17-18.
