MEMPHIS—Strong pitching ruled the day Saturday as the Christian Brothers University Bucs swept a doubleheader from visiting Loyola (La.), winning the opener 6-5 before taking a 2-1 win in the second game.
In the top of the first in game one, CBU (4-2) starter
Cary Crain (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) struck out the side after pitching himself into a jam, walking the bases loaded and allowing an RBI single to put the Wolfpack (6-9) on the board.
In the bottom of the inning,
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) and
Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) hit a pair of singles, and they came home when
Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) tripled into the right-field corner.
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) drew a walk, and when he was caught stealing, Hardin came home during the rundown before the out was recorded.
The Wolfpack tied the game again in the fourth, scoring a pair of runs on three hits and an error.
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) beat out a drag bunt down the first base line to start the bottom of the fourth, and he scored on a
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) sacrifice fly to put the Bucs back on top.
Loyola tied it again in the top of the seventh when Trey Sofio drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Steve Daigle double, but the Bucs took the lead for good in the bottom of the inning. They started the inning with three straight singles from
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School),
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS), and Goode, bringing Wilson home. Franklin scored what proved to be the winning run on a double play, giving the Bucs a 6-4 edge.
The Wolfpack cut the lead back to 6-5 in the eighth as Taylor Domengeaux reached on an error and scored on a Tyler Duplantis single, but
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) put out the fire and retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save of the season.
Goode went 3-for-4 in the game, while
Rob Maxwell (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) and
Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) each went 2-for-4. Short drew three walks and a hit by pitch to reach safely in all four appearances.
Jon-Michael Davis (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) earned the win, allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks in four innings out of the bullpen. He struck out five, as did Crain in three and two-third innings. Crain also walked five and allowed four hits. Short threw the final inning and a third with one hit and two strikeouts.
In the second game,
Lee Paine (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) pitched a brilliant game, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks in six innings. Burrow gave him all the run support he would need in the bottom of the second inning. After an
Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss./DeSoto Central HS) walk, Burrow tripled down the right field line, and he scored on a fielder's choice when Wilson hit a grounder to third.
The Wolfpack's lone run came in the fifth when Slade Sanders singled and came home on a Domengeaux single with two out, but Paine pitched out of the jam with a groundout to leave two runners stranded.
The Wolfpack threatened again in the final inning as Sanders reached third after a leadoff walk and a wild pitch, but Short nailed down his second save of the day with a strikeout and a popout to leave him at third and protect the win.
Goode and Burrow each went 2-for-3 in the game for the Bucs.
The Bucs and Wolfpack meet again for a single game Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
