MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs used a five-run seventh inning to rally for an 8-5 win over Loyola (La.) Sunday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Bucs (5-2) opened the scoring in the second inning when
Aaron Short (Cleveland, Tenn./Cleveland HS) was hit by a pitch and scored on a
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) single. The Wolfpack (6-10) tied the game with an unearned run in the third inning, and they took their first lead of the game when a pair of singles brought home another run in the fourth.
They scored two more after a double, a hit batter, and a misplayed sacrifice bunt loaded the bases with none out in the fifth. An error and a groundout brought two more home before
Jimmy Franklin (Knoxville, Tenn./Powell HS) got the Bucs out of the inning with a perfect throw home after a flyout to centerfield.
Lans Hardin (Keystone Heights, Fla./Keystone Heights HS) pulled the Bucs within a run in the sixth, hitting a two-run double after a pair of walks. In the seventh, the Bucs began their rally with three straight one-out hits, with Burrow scoring on a
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) double. After a two-out error scored Wilson,
Alfredo Arroyo (San Antonio, Texas/James Madison HS) hit an RBI triple to right and scored on a
Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) hit to left. Vanaman scored on a Hardin single, putting the Bucs in front 8-4.
Four walks in the eighth inning brought the Wolfpack within three runs, but
Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) struck out Ryan Scott with the bases loaded to end the threat, and he pitched his way out of a jam in the ninth for his first save.
Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) improved to 2-0 as he went seven innings, allowing five runs on four hits and three walks. Garbuzinski tossed an inning and a third out of the pen, allowing one hit and a hit batter as he struck out one. Hardin went 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Burrow went 2-for-4.
Brent Goode (Jackson, Tenn./North Side HS) scored a pair of runs.
The Bucs hit the road for the first time this season Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. when they travel to New Albany, Miss., to visit Blue Mountain. The Bucs come home Wednesday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader against LeMoyne-Owen.
