Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs converted 12 West Florida turnovers into 20 points Thursday night on their way to an 81-77 win in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.
After the first half and the first seven minutes of the second half were back-and-forth, with six ties and six lead changes, the Bucs (10-2, 1-0 GSC) took the lead for good with three triples in 43 seconds.
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) sank the first three to put the Bucs in front, and after he picked the pocket of UWF swingman Jamar Moore, he hit another three-pointer on the fastbreak just 10 seconds later.
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) collected a steal and finished the burst with another three-pointer, giving the Bucs a 59-51 lead with 11:53 remaining. The Argos (9-5, 0-1) never came closer than five points again.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) led the Bucs with 22 points and eight rebounds as he became the 35th member of the school's 1,000-point club.
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) scored 17 with five rebounds and four assists, and Green scored 16 with four assists and a game-high three steals.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored 12 and matched Green's three steals.
Marquis Mathis led the Argos with 22 points and three blocks to go with eight rebounds. Anthony Sims scored 14, and Moore and Peter Connole scored 11 each.
The Bucs won despite allowing the Argos to shoot 60 percent (33-of-55), the first team to reach that mark against the Bucs since Montevallo in 2007. The Bucs shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) overall but made 34.5 percent (10-of-29) of their three-pointers and shot a near-perfect 93.8 percent (15-of-16) at the free throw line. The Argos out-rebounded the Bucs 33-25, but the Bucs held a 12-5 edge in turnovers.
The Bucs visit Valdosta State Saturday night at 7 p.m. before coming home next Thursday night to host West Alabama, also at 7 p.m.
