Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs made 13 of 22 three-pointers as they edged host Valdosta State 80-79 in overtime Saturday night.
The Bucs (11-2, 2-0 GSC) used a 13-2 run bridging the intermission to take a 39-28 lead on a
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) layup with 16:55 remaining in regulation. After the Blazers (7-5, 1-1) trimmed the CBU lead to 55-54 with 6:26 remaining, the Bucs appeared to salt the game away with a 12-3 run capped when
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) made a triple to give the Bucs a 67-57 lead with 3:17 remaining. But the Blazers ended regulation on a 12-2 run, tying the game on a Tristan Steele jumper with 7.5 seconds remaining.
Drake made another three-pointer with 2:37 remaining in overtime to give the Bucs the lead for good at 77-74. The remainder of the game's scoring came at the free throw line. Will Alston made two to cut the Bucs' lead to 79-78 with 11 seconds remaining.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) made one of two free throws with 10 seconds to play, giving the Blazers a chance at the last shot with a two-point deficit. Sidney Harris missed a layup with two seconds left, but Josh Sparks grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 0.5 seconds remaining. Sparks made the first free throw to pull within a point, but he missed the second and Drake grabbed the rebound to end the game.
Dennis scored a team-high 22 points with seven rebounds, five assists, three steals, and two blocks to pace the Bucs.
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored 13 with a career-high eight assists, and Warner added a dozen with three blocks.
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) tacked on 11 points, and Drake added a team-best eight rebounds to his 10 points.
Steele paced the Blazers with 28 points, and Harris scored 16.
The Bucs shot 50.8 percent (30-of-59) overall, including 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from three-point range, while the Blazers were 46.9 percent (30-of-64) overall and 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from beyond the arc. The Blazers out-rebounded the Bucs 37-31 overall, with a 9-4 edge in offensive rebounds. The Bucs committed 14 turnovers while forcing 12, and VSU held a 22-13 edge in points off turnovers.
The Bucs come home Thursday night at 7 p.m. to face West Alabama as they begin a stretch of six of their next seven games at home.
