Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Bucs won their second consecutive Gulf South Conference championship Sunday with a resounding 5-1 win over Delta State at Brosnaham Park.
The offensive assault started early for the Bucs (11-7-1), beginning in the sixth minute when
Michael Hollier (Lafayette, La./Teurlings HS) fired a volley into the net from the top of the 18-yard box.
Jose Ferraz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) doubled the lead in the 14th minute as he scored on a sliding shot off a cross from
Nico Alvarez-Garcia (Oviedo, Spain/Dr. Fleming). The Statesmen (8-11-1) pulled within one in the 26th minute when Sebastian Ridout scored off the rebound after
Jaime Garcia (San Salvador, El Salvador/Lincoln School) saved a Steven Simmons free kick.
The Bucs put it out of reach with a quick burst midway through the second half. In the 69th minute,
Tony Aloia (Hallsville, Texas/Hallsville HS) headed a DSU goal kick forward, serving as a perfect through-ball to
Matt Derise (Lafayette, La./St. Thomas More HS), who scored one-on-one against the keeper to extend the lead to 3-1. In the 74th minute, Aloia and Derise combined to set up another CBU goal. Aloia chased a long ball into the corner and dropped a pass to Derise. Derise sent a cross into the middle for
Neil Cummings (Belfast, Northern Ireland/St. Malachy's College), who headed it into the left side of the net.
In the 87th minute, senior
William McAllister (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) set the final margin as he scored his first goal at CBU.
Adam Thornton (Vicksburg, Miss./St. Aloysius HS) crossed a pass to
Jared Roberts (Fort Worth, Texas/Nolan Catholic HS) at the back post, and Roberts fed a pass to McAllister for the score.
Andrew Ballard (Memphis, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian HS),
David Skull (Adelaide, Australia/Woodcroft College), and
Adamandios Toras (Meitarie, La./Archbishop Rummel HS) earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. DSU's Simmons won the Most Outstanding Player award.
The Bucs out-shot DSU 16-9 for the game, with both teams putting seven shots on target. Garcia made six saves to earn the win.
