Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala.—Host West Alabama shot 62.5 percent from three-point range and 51.0 percent overall as they stunned the No. 10 Christian Brothers University Bucs 69-64 Thursday night to knock the Bucs out of first place in the Gulf South Conference.
The Tigers (7-16, 4-6 GSC) opened the game on a 12-2 run capped by back-to-back Alquan Mendenhall three-pointers with 15:11 remaining in the first half, and they extended their lead to as many as 15 points when a Josh Spears layup put them ahead 27-12 with 9:26 remaining in the half.
The Bucs (17-4, 8-2) stormed back as back-to-back
Pat Graham (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) threes sparked an 18-5 run that Graham capped with a jumper in the lane to cut the deficit to 32-30 with 1:42 remaining in the half. A 17-5 run for UWA seemed to put the game on ice early in the first half, leaving them with a 57-42 lead on a Ryan Fitch dunk with 11:23 remaining.
The Bucs would answer again, first with a
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) jumper. Graham knocked down three three-pointers during the run, and a
Zack Warner (St. Louis, Mo./Clayton HS) three cut the deficit to 65-62 with 3:17 remaining. After neither team scored for nearly three minutes, a Warner dunk with 29 seconds remaining capped the 22-8 run when it pulled the Bucs within a point at 65-64.
At that point, the Bucs had only been charged for one foul in the half, so the Bucs committed six consecutive fouls to eventually put UWA's Phillip Morris on the free throw line with 21 seconds remaining. Morris made the first free throw but missed the second, and Jared Woolfolk grabbed the rebound. He sank both free throws to extend UWA's lead to 68-64. The Bucs committed a turnover, and UWA's Steven Samuels sank another free throw to salt away the victory.
Graham scored a career-high 17 points to lead the Bucs, while Warner had 15 points and tied his career-high with eight assists. Dennis scored 13.
Mendenhall scored 24 to lead the Tigers, making 9-of-12 from the field overall including 6-of-9 from three-point range. Fitch added 17.
As a team, the Tigers were 10-of-16 from three-point range and 26-of-51 overall. The Bucs shot 49 percent (25-of-51) for the game, including 39.4 percent (13-of-33) from three-point range. UWA out-rebounded the Bucs 32-24, including a 9-5 edge in offensive boards. Each team committed nine turnovers.
The Bucs visit West Georgia Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Their next home game is set for Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. against No. 6 Alabama-Huntsville.
