Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—No. 3 Alabama-Huntsville made four straight three-pointers during a 12-0 run midway through the second half as they rallied for a 71-61 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Thursday night.
The Bucs (8-4, 3-1 GSC) stayed with the high-powered Chargers throughout, using a 12-0 run early in the second half to stake a 40-34 lead on a pair of
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) free throws with 13:45 remaining. They kept their lead steady until just before the 10-minute mark, when UAH (12-1, 5-0) made the decisive run.
Jaime Smith started the run with a triple with 10:42 remaining to cut the CBU lead to 45-43. Andrew Donovan followed with a triple a minute later to put UAH ahead for good. After Wayne Dedrick followed with another three-pointer, Donovan capped the run with another triple, the Chargers’ fourth in as many possessions, to give UAH a 52-45 lead with 8:03 remaining. The Bucs never came closer than four points again, and the Chargers put it out of reach as two more Dedrick threes keyed a 9-1 burst to extend the lead to 67-54 with 3:07 remaining.
Drake led the Bucs with 14 points and six rebounds, and
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) continued his strong play with 13 points off the bench.
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) added 11 points and two blocks.
Smith led the Chargers with 22 points and six assists, followed by 17 from Zane Campbell and 14 from Dedrick.
The Chargers shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor to the Bucs’ 42.0 percent (21-of-50). UAH grabbed 33 rebounds to the Bucs’ 26, including an 8-5 edge in offensive boards, while each team committed eight turnovers.
The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. when they visit Shorter. Their next home game is Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. against West Georgia.
