Box Score MEMPHIS--Heavy rain pushed through the Memphis area Sunday morning, raining out Sunday afternoon's baseball game between the Christian Brothers University Bucs and Northwestern Ohio. The rainout also means Saturday's suspended second game ends in a 6-4 win for the Bucs, giving them a split in the doubleheader.
The Bucs (1-1) struck first in the bottom of the first inning as
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) worked a leadoff walk. He moved to second on a balk and scored on a throwing error on a
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) sacrifice bunt. The Racers (1-4) took a third-inning lead with three runs on three singles, a walk, a hit batter, and a double.
The Bucs cut the deficit in half with a two-out rally in the third inning.
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) singled, moved to second on a walk, and scored when
Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) singled on a slow roller to second. The Bucs took the lead in the fifth, when a leadoff double by Burnett preceded a pair of walks to load the bases. Joe hit an RBI groundout to tie the game at three, and
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put the Bucs back on top.
The Racers answered with a run in the top of the sixth, manufacturing a run on a hit batter, a sacrifice bunt, and a single. Jenkins sparked the Bucs' two-run sixth-inning rally with a one-out bunt single, and he moved to second on a wild throw to first. Burnett followed with a double to right, and
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) scored Burnett with another double to right to set the final margin.
The game was suspended due to darkness after the sixth inning, but Sunday's rainout means the game is final.
Burnett went 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs, and Jenkins also went 2-for-3 with two runs. Cooley scored twice, and Joe drove in two runs.
Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks over six innings.
The Bucs return to action Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m., when they host Loyola of New Orleans for a doubleheader.
