Box Score MEMPHIS-Despite playing without their two original starting guards, the Christian Brothers University Bucs stunned No. 7 Alabama-Huntsville 55-48 Thursday night at Canale Arena as they moved within a game and a half of second place in the Gulf South Conference standings.
The Bucs (14-7, 9-4 GSC) struggled out of the gate, remaining scoreless for more than five minutes and only scoring two points in the first six minutes.
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) sparked the Bucs' offense with back-to-back jumpers, beginning with one with 13:45 remaining in the first half. By the time back-to-back
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) three-pointers capped what became a 17-2 CBU run, the Bucs led 19-8 with 7:06 remaining in the half.
The Chargers (18-4, 11-3) used a 9-0 run early in the second half to tie the game at 27 on a pair of Greg Gardner free throws with 14:08 remaining. This time, it was
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) who provided the answer for the Bucs, scoring two straight baskets in the paint to put the Bucs back on top for good. The Bucs extended their lead back to double figures on back-to-back threes by Hildreth and
Dominic Fragale (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), giving the Bucs a 48-38 cushion with 4:19 remaining. The Chargers cut the lead back to 48-46 after a Jaime Smith triple with 1:21 remaining, but Drake scored in the post with 46 seconds remaining to snap an 8-0 run. With 37.1 seconds remaining, Hildreth took a charge from UAH forward Zane Campbell, giving the Bucs a chance to seal the game at the free throw line. The Bucs were 5-of-6 at the stripe in the final minute to protect the victory.
Hildreth scored a career-high 23 points with five rebounds, knocking down five three-pointers in 37 minutes. Drake scored 15 with seven rebounds and three steals, and Fleming added 11 with four rebounds and two steals.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) collected four assists and three steals to go with two free throws and exceptional defense on Smith, holding him 10 points below his average.
The Bucs won on a night where both teams were cold from the field, with CBU shooting 35.8 percent (19-of-53) to UAH's 36.2 percent (17-of-47). UAH out-rebounded the Bucs 35-29, but CBU held a 6-5 edge in offensive rebounds and forced 14 turnovers while committing a season-low six.
The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they host Shorter for Homecoming.
