Box Score 2 MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs split a doubleheader with Kentucky Wesleyan Saturday afternoon at Buc Field, with CBU winning the second game 3-2 after dropping the opener 9-1.
In game two, senior righthander
Alex Sikes (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) tossed a gem, holding the Panthers (1-1) to two runs on three hits and four walks against nine strikeouts. The Bucs (3-6) gave Sikes all the run support he would need with one out in the third inning. After
Taylor Seaman (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) reached on an error,
Cale Alexander (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) was hit by a pitch.
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) hit an RBI double to left-center, and
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) followed with a two-run single up the middle to score both Alexander and Jenkins to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead.
The Panthers used a double and a single in the fourth inning to shave a run off the lead, and a leadoff homer from Mark Hagedorn in the seventh pulled them within a run. Sikes struck out the next batter, Josh Vance, but he reached on a wild pitch. Sikes stranded him at second after a groundout and two more strikeouts.
Jenkins went 2-for-3 for the Bucs in the game.
In the first game, the Panthers scored runs in four different innings. They took the lead with a run on a pair of first-inning singles, and they used a walk and two hits to plate another run in the third. Four singles and a wild pitch in the fourth inning brought two more runs home to stake a 4-0 lead.
Charles Armour (Brighton, Tenn./Brighton HS) doubled down the left field line to lead off the fifth, and he scored on a pair of groundouts to put the Bucs on the board. The Panthers put it out of reach in the top of the seventh, scoring five runs as they batted around on five singles and a triple.
Armour went 3-for-3 with two doubles in the game, and sophomore
Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) held the Panthers to one run on one hit over three and a third innings of relief. He struck out three batters to lower his season ERA to 1.04.
The Bucs and Panthers meet again for another doubleheader Sunday at noon, with both games slated for seven innings.
