Box Score LIVINGSTON, Ala.-Host West Alabama shot 55.8 percent from the floor in an 83-65 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon, scoring the most points allowed by the Bucs since March 2008.
The Tigers (10-13, 6-10 GSC) used a dunk and a layup from Jack Hill to start what became a 14-5 run in a tie game after the Bucs (16-8, 11-5) had tied the game at 14. By the time Hill made a layup to end the run, the Tigers led 28-19 with 8:28 remaining in the half, and the Bucs never came closer than five points again.
When the Bucs cut the deficit to 44-39 on a
Pat Graham (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) layup with 16:18 remaining, the Tigers answered with a 16-5 run capped by a Sandy Underwood layup with 9:34 remaining that gave them a 60-44 edge. The Bucs pulled within 67-60 on a pair of
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) free throws, but UWA ended the game with another 16-5 run to pull away to the 83-65 final margin.
The Tigers became the first team to score more than 80 points against CBU since March 9, 2008, when the Bucs beat Harding 93-89 in the GSC championship game. CBU had only allowed 80 points once since, in an 80-75 loss at Nova Southeastern Dec. 3, 2009.
Casey scored 19 points to lead the Bucs.
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored 15, and
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) scored 13 with five rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) added 10.
Underwood led the Tigers with 19 points. Hill scored 18, and Steven Samuels scored 15 with a game-high nine rebounds. Aaron Cobb added 12.
The Bucs shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) for the game to UWA's 55.8 percent (29-of-52). UWA out-rebounded the Bucs 40-24, including a 15-12 edge in offensive boards, and they forced 10 CBU turnovers while committing nine.
With Alabama-Huntsville's win over North Alabama, the Bucs remain in sole possession of second place, a game ahead of UNA with two to play. UAH (14-3) clinched the top seed in next month's GSC Tournament. CBU (11-5) can clinch the No. 2 seed with a win in either of their two games next week or with at least one loss by both North Alabama (10-6) and fourth-place Valdosta State (9-7)
The Bucs wrap up the regular season with a pair of home games next week. They take on Valdosta State Thursday night at 7 p.m., and they host West Florida for Senior Day Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
