Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs shot 63.8 percent from the floor as they rolled to a 93-79 win over Valdosta State Thursday night, clinching the No. 2 seed in next week's Raymond James Gulf South Conference Tournament at the Pete Hanna Center in Birmingham, Ala.
The Bucs (17-8, 12-5 GSC) started slow, missing three of their first four shots as Valdosta State (17-8, 9-8) opened a 6-2 lead in the first three minutes. But the Bucs answered with a 16-2 run capped when
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) drove the baseline for a two-hand slam to give CBU an 18-8 lead with 8:14 remaining in the first half. The Blazers never came closer than six points again.
A 10-0 burst late in the first half gave the Bucs some breathing room.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) capped the run with a three-point play that put CBU ahead 37-21 with 1:07 remaining in the half. A Casey triple capped an 11-2 run in the second half to give the Bucs their biggest edge of the day, 62-42 with 11:32 remaining. VSU cut the lead back to 10 points twice, but the Bucs again found answers and held on for the victory.
Casey scored 25 points, one off his career-high, making 8-of-9 field goals, including both of his three-pointers, and 7-of-8 free throws. He added five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Pat Graham (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) scored 20, including five three-pointers, before fouling out in 25 minutes. Fleming scored 16 points with 10 rebounds and a game-high six assists.
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) and
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) scored 12 points each, with Sall dishing out three assists.
Shaquille Harris scored a game-high 27 for the Blazers, but the Bucs held him to 10-of-27 shooting, including 5-of-17 from three-point range. Patrick Diop and James Anacreon scored 11 each.
The Bucs shot 63.8 percent (30-of-47) overall, including 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from three-point range. VSU shot 38.3 percent (31-of-81) while taking the most shots in a game allowed by the Bucs since December 2005, when Crichton took 82 shots in a 107-89 CBU win. The Blazers out-rebounded CBU 35-32, including a 23-7 edge in offensive rebounds, and they forced 21 CBU turnovers while committing 11.
With the win, the Bucs clinch at least a share of second place in the GSC standings, and the top four seeds for the tournament are set. CBU sits a game ahead of North Alabama (18-7, 11-6) with one to play, but CBU holds the tiebreaker by winning both head to head matchups. North Alabama clinched the No. 3 seed with a win over West Georgia tonight and Valdosta State's loss to CBU. Despite losing, VSU locked up the No. 4 seed with West Florida's loss at Delta State.
The Bucs wrap up the regular season with Senior Day Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. against West Florida. They will play Thursday, March 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the first men's quarterfinal in the GSC Tournament.
