Box Score MEMPHIS--Visiting Northwestern Ohio scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to take control on their way to a 9-5 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. The Bucs led the second game 6-4 after six innings when the game was suspended until Sunday afternoon due to darkness.
The Bucs (0-1) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when
Jarrett Jenkins (Ridgeland, Miss./Ridgeland HS) walked, moved to third on a pair of errors, and came home on a
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) sacrifice fly. They added two more an inning later when
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) blasted a two-run shot to center to score
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center), who started the inning with a double.
The Racers (1-3) used three hits, a walk, and a pair of wild pitches to push three runs across in the top of the third to tie the game, and they took the lead an inning later when they scored three runs on five singles.
The Bucs pulled within a run by scoring in the fourth and fifth innings. Hopkins started the fourth with a single, and after advancing to second on an error, he scored on a
Tanner Sandel (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) single to right. In the fifth,
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) doubled down the right field line and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hopkins.
The Racers manufactured an insurance run in the seventh on a single, a stolen base, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly. A two-out two-run eighth-inning single by Cory Cook set the final margin.
Sandel, Hopkins, and
Stephen Joe (Madison, Miss./Ridgeland HS) collected two hits each for the Bucs. Goodwin drove in two runs, and Hopkins scored twice.
Michael Lartigue (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) tossed two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief for the Bucs.
The Bucs led 6-4 after six innings when the second game was suspended. It will be completed at noon Sunday before the originally-scheduled game.
