Bulldogs Edge Bucs 73-70

Trey Casey scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds, but the Bucs dropped a 73-70 decision at Union Saturday afternoon.
Box Score JACKSON, Tenn.--Host Union out-scored the Christian Brothers University Bucs 22-11 over the final 9:11 Saturday afternoon to claim a 73-70 win over the short-handed Bucs.

The Bulldogs (5-16, 3-10 GSC) built a 14-5 lead in the first five minutes, but the Bucs clawed back, taking their first lead of the game on a Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) basket with 17 seconds remaining in the first half.  Hildreth scored nine points during an 11-2 run early in the second half, capping it with a four-point play to give the Bucs (13-7, 8-4) a 49-42 lead with 14:24 remaining.  Another Hildreth triple and two Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) free throws put the Bucs on top 59-51 with 9:33 remaining, their biggest lead of the night.

From there, the Bucs went cold, making just 4-of-13 shots, missing all four three-point shots, and committing three turnovers in the final nine minutes.  A Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) jumper put the Bucs on top 70-68 with 1:37 remaining, but Union's Dani Marti answered with a three-pointer to put the Bulldogs on top 71-70 with 1:18 remaining.  The Bucs committed turnovers on their next two possessions, forcing them to foul.  After UU's Roy Bullock made two free throws, the Bucs missed a three.  After Union missed the front end of a one-and-one at the free throw line, the Bucs missed their final look at a possible tying three-pointer at the buzzer.

Hildreth scored a career-high 21 points in his first start, his third straight game in double figures, making 8-of-18 shots overall including 4-of-10 three-pointers.  Drake and Casey scored 18 each, with Casey hauling down a career-best 10 rebounds to go with three steals.  Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) added 10 rebounds, three steals, and four assists.  The Bucs were missing point guard Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS), who had played all 40 minutes in six of the past eight games and had played at least 34 minutes in 14 straight games.  McArthy suffered an injury in the final seconds of the Bucs' win at No. 22 North Alabama Thursday night.

Corieon Pearson scored 20 points with six rebounds to lead the Bulldogs.  Anthony Freeman and Marti scored 13 each.  Bullock scored 11, and Pedro Faller tacked on 10.

Union shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) for the game to the Bucs' 44.3 percent (27-of-61).  The Bulldogs were 45.8 percent (11-of-24) from beyond the arc to the Bucs' 37.0 percent (10-of-27).  CBU out-rebounded Union 34-31, including a 10-5 edge in offensive rebounds, but they committed 13 turnovers to Union's nine.

The Bucs come home Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they take on No. 9 Alabama-Huntsville.
