Box Score MEMPHIS-Senior first baseman
Braden Keathley (Henderson, Nev., Silverado HS) hit two home runs, including a walk-off shot to right, to lift the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 9-8 win in 10 innings against Williams Baptist Tuesday afternoon.
The Bucs (6-13) played from behind the whole way after the Eagles (5-16) scored a run in the first and two in the second. They used a double and two singles to score a run in the first, but a good throw from centerfielder
Tanner Sandel (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) threw out a potential second run at the plate. In the second, they used three straight two-out singles to plate a pair and take a 3-0 lead before Keathley blasted his first homer of the game in the bottom of the second to put the Bucs on the board.
Mac Cooley (Bartlett, Tenn./Horn Lake HS) singled and scored on a
Caleb Goodwin (Shreveport, La./Evangel Christian Academy) sacrifice fly to pull within a run.
The Eagles tacked on two more in the third on a walk, a double, and a single, but the Bucs again answered with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by
Charles Kelly (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS). The Eagles added a run to their lead in the fifth on two walks and two singles, and they extended their lead to 7-3 in the top of the eighth with a run on a wild pitch after a single and a double.
The Bucs rallied with a fury in the bottom of the eighth, plating five runs to take an 8-7 lead as they batted around.
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) started the inning with a walk, and after a walk, he scored on a wild throw to first on a would-be double play ball. Sandel followed with a double on a sharp grounder past the shortstop, and
Tyler Burnett (Germantown, Tenn./Germantown HS) followed with a two-run double.
Josh Hopkins (Olive Branch, Miss./Southern Baptist Educational Center) hit an RBI single to center to tie the game, and Cooley doubled to the fence in center to score Hopkins for the go-ahead run.
The Eagles started the ninth with a walk and two singles to tie the game, but the Bucs survived the inning on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt and a double play, and they squandered a leadoff single by Wilson in the bottom of the ninth.
After
Jake Porter (Mount Juliet, Tenn./Mount Juliet HS) threw a perfect 10th, the first two Bucs flew out to right before Keathley blasted the walk-off homer to right on an 0-1 pitch, giving the Bucs their first walk-off homer since March 26, 2006, when Charlie Soukup hit a three-run walk-off to center to lift the Bucs to an 8-6 win over Arkansas-Monticello.
Sandel went 3-for-5 for the Bucs, while Keathley was 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Wilson went 2-for-4, and Cooley was 2-for-5 with two runs. Burnett drove in two runs.
Jake Garbuzinski (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) tossed three scoreless innings of relief, and Porter (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
The Bucs return to action Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Illinois Wesleyan.
