Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.-Early in Saturday's NCAA South Regional quarterfinal, No. 9 Alabama-Huntsville seemed on the verge of a blowout win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs, making eight of their first nine three-pointers to open a 28-10 lead just nine minutes into the game. But the Bucs responded, taking a four-point lead in the final minutes before UAH guard Jaime Smith knocked down a game-winning jumper from the right elbow with 2.5 seconds remaining to give the Chargers a 60-58 win.
Smith, the Daktronics South Region Player of the Year, scored just 67 points in the first eight games of his career against CBU (21-9). Saturday, he scored 31, including 15 in the first 5:45 on 5-of-5 three-point shooting, lifting UAH (24-5) to a 21-7 lead. By the time the Chargers' initial salvo ended on a Greg Gardner triple with 11:20 remaining in the half, the Bucs trailed 28-10, their largest first-half deficit of the season.
Back-to-back threes by
Pat Graham (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green HS) and
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) started the Bucs' comeback. After a Graham layup, back-to-back triples from Hildreth and
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) trimmed the deficit to four points with a 14-0 run. Early in the second half, Drake scored five straight points to put the Bucs ahead 44-43, their first lead of the game, with 14:55 remaining.
Neither team scored again for more than four minutes, when Smith knocked down back-to-back threes to put UAH back in front 49-44. But again, the Bucs found an answer as
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) knocked down a long three-pointer and made a put-back layup as the shot clock expired to tie the game at 49 with 6:43 remaining.
A Hildreth three-point play with 5:06 remaining started a 7-1 run that gave the Bucs their biggest lead of the day, 56-52 on a pair of free throws by
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) with 3:41 to play. UAH regained the lead with a pair of Xavier Baldwin treys, the second after an offensive rebound with 1:32 remaining.
On their final possession, the Bucs worked the ball inside to Drake, who scored in the post with 18 seconds remaining to tie the game, but Smith's pull-up jumper at the right elbow proved to be the game-winner as the Bucs' halfcourt heave at the buzzer missed.
Drake scored a team-high 24 points to go with eight rebounds and three assists. Hildreth scored 12 with five rebounds and three blocks, and Graham scored 10.
Smith scored 31 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including 7-of-11 from three-point range. Wayne Dedrick scored 10.
The Chargers advance to play sixth-seeded Benedict Sunday night. Benedict upset third-seeded Eckerd 68-65 in overtime in Saturday's first quarterfinal.
