Bucs Put Tigers Away 75-61

Michael Drake scored 24 points and nine rebounds in the Bucs' 75-61 win over West Alabama Thursday night in the Raymond James Gulf South Conference Tournament quarterfinals.
Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-The Christian Brothers University Bucs out-scored seventh-seeded West Alabama 26-8 over the final 12 minutes to claim a 75-61 win in the quarterfinals of the Raymond James Gulf South Conference Basketball Tournament at the Pete Hanna Center.

The Bucs (19-8) never trailed in the first half, leading by as many as eight points, but the Tigers (10-16) steadily chipped away at the lead, taking a 53-49 lead when a Desmond Raymond jumper capped a 12-2 run with 12:03 remaining.

From there, the Bucs clamped down, holding the Tigers to just eight points on 3-of-20 shooting over the final 12 minutes. Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) started the comeback with three consecutive free throws, and a Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) three put the Bucs back on top 57-55 with 9:20 remaining. The Bucs' lead grew to as many as 15 points in the final minutes.

Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) led the Bucs with game-highs of 24 points and nine rebounds, and Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored 18. Fleming scored 15 with seven rebounds, five steals, and three assists.

Raymond led the Tigers with 20. Steven Samuels scored 12, and Joshua Millsap added 11.

The Bucs shot 46 percent (23-of-50) to the Tigers' 40.4 percent (21-of-52), but the Bucs were 85.2 percent (23-of-27) at the free throw line to the Tigers' 61.9 percent (13-of-21). The Bucs out-rebounded UWA 38-28, including an 18-16 edge in offensive rebounds, and each team committed eight turnovers.

The Bucs advance to the semifinals Saturday night at 7:30 p.m., when they will face the winner of tomorrow night's quarterfinal between third-seeded North Alabama and sixth-seeded West Florida.
