Box Score MEMPHIS–Visiting West Florida scored three second half goals to claim a 4-2 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Friday night at Signaigo Field in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools.
The Argos (2-1, 1-0 GSC) struck first in the 14th minute as Andre Verardi took advantage of a failed clearance attempt by the Bucs (1-2, 0-1), gathering the ball at the top of the 18-yard box and scoring.
The Bucs seemed to gain control afterwards. They equalized in the 19th minute as
Matt Derise (Lafayette, La./St. Thomas More HS) scored his second goal of the season.
Shaun Abbott (St. Helens, England/De la Salle HS) sent a cross to
Jose Ferraz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/) at the back post. Ferraz headed it to Derise, who scored a one-touch goal. They took the lead in the 26th minute as Ferraz headed in a throw from
Samuel Wilson (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), giving the Bucs a 2-1 edge htey would hold into the second half.
The Bucs controlled play for most of the opening half, out-shooting the Argos 8-2, including a 4-1 edge in shots on goal.
The second half would belong to the Argos.
They would equalize in the 64th minute as Nick Salafrio found Miguel Santos on the six-yard box, and Santos found the net. The Argos took the lead five minutes later off a corner kick. Marteinn Urbancic sent a corner kick to Felipe Oliveira at the back post. Oliveira passed to Dillon Gallet at the top of the 18-yard box, and Gallet found the net to give the Argos the lead for good.
Gallet returned the favor in the 83rd minute as he fed a throughball to Urbancic, who scored to set the final margin at 4-2.
For the game, the Bucs out-shot UWF 13-7, with each team putting five shots on goal.
The Bucs return to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host West Alabama.
