Box Score MEMPHIS-Visiting North Alabama out-scored the Christian Brothers University Bucs 52-34 over the final 16:23 as they came back for a 96-89 win after CBU had led by as many as 11 points.
After a back-and-forth start, the Bucs (8-6, 4-4 GSC) used a 13-0 run over six minutes of the first half to take a 35-26 lead on a
Charlie Oswald (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) layup with 5:09 remaining. After UNA (10-6, 4-4) whittled the lead back to five, the Bucs stretched the lead to 55-44 with 16:36 remaining as
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) sank four consecutive free throws.
From there, however, the Lions chipped away at the lead, pulling within four points with a 9-2 burst. Then, after back-to-back CBU layups, UNA used a 10-2 run to tie the game at 63 on a Bruce Adams three-pointer with 11:58 remaining. The Lions took the lead for good when a Marquel Darrington three-point play put them ahead 75-72 with 6:44 remaining. A three-point play from Adams and a layup by Nathan Spehr extended their lead to 87-80 with 1:56 remaining, and the Bucs never came closer than four points again as UNA made 9-of-10 free throws in the final minute.
Casey led the Bucs again with 31 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the field and 9-of-10 from the free throw line. He also snatched a career-high six steals, tied for third in school history in a game.
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) also entered the record book, dishing out a career-high nine assists, tied for the 12th-best total in a game in school history.
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) scored 16, and
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) scored 14. Oswald and
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) added 12 points each.
Spehr paced the Lions with 23 points, and Adams scored 20 with seven rebounds. Calvin Dade and Rashaun Claiborne scored 13 each, and Wes Long added 11.
The
Lions shot 52.5 percent (31-of-59) from the floor to the Bucs' 51.7 percent (31-of-60), but the Lions' advantage was largely from three-point range, where they shot 39.3 percent (11-of-28) to the Bucs' 27.6 percent (8-of-29). UNA shot 88.5 percent (23-of-26) from the free throw line, while the Bucs were 79.2 percent (19-of-24). The Lions outrebounded CBU 32-28, with each team grabbing nine offensive boards. UNA committed 13 turnovers, while the Bucs committed 12.
UNA's 96 points were the most allowed by CBU since Feb. 20, 2003, when CBU won 107-101 over Harding in double-overtime. UNA's total was the most allowed by CBU in regulation since a 98-72 loss at Southern Arkansas Jan. 14, 2002.
The Bucs wrap up the first half of the GSC schedule on the road next week as they visit West Florida Thursday night and Valdosta State Saturday night. Both games will tip off at 7 p.m. Central.
