Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs gave head coach Mike Nienaber his 500th career victory Thursday night as they defeated Alabama-Huntsville 70-58.
The Bucs (10-7, 6-5 GSC) never trailed over the final 36 minutes, but the Chargers (10-8, 6-5) never allowed the lead to grow past eight, using a 5-0 burst to pull within 52-50 on a pair of Conner Blasi free throws with 6:26 remaining.
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) answered with a three-pointer to spark an 11-0 run, with
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) knocking down a critical three-pointer at the end of the shot clock and adding four free throws to extend the lead to 63-50 with 1:57 remaining. The Bucs never allowed UAH closer than 10 points again.
McArthy scored a career-high 20 points, shooting a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line, CBU's first perfect free throw shooting night with 10 attempts since Clint Dowdle went 11-for-11 against Harding in January 2004. Casey and
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) scored 18 each, with Casey hauling down nine rebounds and Fleming dishing out five assists.
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to go with 12 points.
Conner Blasi paced the Chargers with 22 points, while Wayne Dedrick scored 10. Greg Gardner had seven assists and four steals to go with seven points.
The Bucs shot 55 percent (22-of-40) for the game, their fifth time of the last six games to shoot better than 50 percent. CBU was 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from three-point range while holding UAH to 39.1 percent (18-of-46) overall and 15.8 percent (3-of-19) from beyond the arc. The Bucs out-rebounded UAH 31-18, including an 8-6 edge in offensive rebounds, but UAH forced 18 turnovers while committing 12.
The Bucs return to action Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they host West Alabama.
