Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Bucs shut out visiting West Alabama for more than eight minutes, and junior guard
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio, La Salle HS) scored 10 of his game-high 28 points in the ensuing 18-0 run as the Bucs rallied for a 67-52 win over West Alabama Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.
The Tigers (10-7, 7-4 GSC) were in full control early, using a 21-7 run capped by three straight three-pointers to build a 24-7 lead with 10:32 remaining in the half. The Bucs (11-7, 7-5) whittled away at the lead, eventually closing within 44-43 on a Casey jumper with 10:42 remaining.
Sandy Underwood responded with a three-point play for the Tigers, giving them a 47-43 edge with 10:20 remaining. UWA would not score again until the final two minutes, by which time the Bucs had the game well in hand.
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) sparked the decisive run with a jumper in the lane, and
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) put them in front with back-to-back layups. By the time Casey capped it with a layup with 2:45 remaining, the Bucs led 61-47, and UWA never came closer than 12 points again. During the scoreless streak, the Bucs held UWA to 0-for-7 shooting with four turnovers.
Casey scored 16 of his 28 points in the first half, keeping the Bucs in the game despite shooting just 33.3 percent (9-of-27) overall. For the game, Casey was 9-of-15 overall, including 4-of-8 from three-point range, and he was a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line.
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) scored 12 points with 12 rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes. Fleming dished out seven assists with five steals, both game-highs, to go with seven points.
Jarell Byrd led the Tigers with 15 points to go with eight rebounds, while Lleon Tillman scored nine points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
The Bucs shot a blistering 71.4 percent (15-of-21) in the second half to finish the game at 50 percent (24-of-48) overall. The Tigers were 38.5 percent (20-of-52) for the game. CBU out-rebounded UWA 33-28 and forced 11 turnovers while committing nine.
The Bucs kick off a three-game road trip Thursday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Shorter. Their next home game is Saturday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. as they host Lee for Homecoming.
