Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio, La Salle HS) dished out a career-high 12 assists to lead the Christian Brothers University Bucs to an 81-67 win over West Florida Thursday night at Canale Arena.
After the Argos (6-19, 5-14 GSC) jumped to a 16-9 lead midway through the first half, the Bucs (15-10, 11-8) exploded for a 19-2 run, with Fleming dishing three assists during the run, to open a 28-18 lead on a Fleming layup with 4:38 remaining in the first half.
The Argos answered with a 10-0 burst to draw even at 28 on a Justin Williams trey with 2:46 remaining in the half. CBU responded with a 10-0 run of their own to end the half, with a
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) three-pointer giving the Bucs a 38-28 lead at halftime.
UWF would cut the Bucs' lead to one point in the second half, and they stayed within striking distance until another 10-0 CBU run capped by a Fleming layup gave the Bucs a 79-63 lead with 2:06 remaining.
Fleming's 12 assists were the fifth most in a game in school history, matching Scott Dennis' performance against West Georgia in Jan. 2012 for CBU's highest mark since moving to the NCAA. Fleming also scored 13 points with four rebounds, two steals and no turnovers as he played all 40 minutes. Casey poured in a game-high 27 points, making 7-of-11 three-pointers.
Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College HS) scored 16, and
Sidy Sall (Dakar, Senegal/Seeds Academy) added 14 in 16 minutes off the bench.
Nate Johnson led the Argos with 23 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists. Ellis Young scored 12 with eight rebounds, and Terrence Townes added 11.
The Bucs shot 52.8 percent (28-of-53) for the game to the Argos' 48.3 percent (29-of-60). UWF out-rebounded the Bucs 34-28, including a 9-6 lead in offensive boards, but the Bucs forced 13 turnovers while committing nine.
With the Bucs' win, as well as Delta State's win over Valdosta State, the Bucs will earn the No. 4 or No. 5 seed in the GSC Tournament, where they will face the loser of Saturday's game between Alabama-Huntsville and North Alabama.
The Bucs wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. as they host Valdosta State for Senior Day. They will play in the GSC Tournament at 5:30 p.m. Friday, March 7 at the Pete Hanna Center at Samford University in Birmingham, Ala.
