Cory McArthy (St. Louis, Mo., Christian Brothers College HS) scored a career-high 26 points, surpassing the 1,000-point mark in the process, as he led the Bucs to a 68-48 win over Alabama-Huntsville in the quarterfinals of the Raymond James Gulf South Conference Tournament Friday night.
The Bucs (17-10) used a 19-3 run to blow open a close game midway through the first half, extending their lead to 27-10 on a
Harry Green (Memphis, Tenn./White Station HS) layup with 7:42 remaining in the half. The Chargers (15-13) never came closer than 10 points again, and the Bucs led by as many as 24 points in the second half.
McArthy knocked down 8-of-12 three-pointers, also a career high, on his way to 26 points with two assists and no turnovers in 39 minutes. With his seventh three-pointer, with 7:43 remaining, he surpassed previous career high of 22, set Feb. 22 at North Alabama. He added another with 6:19 remaining to give the Bucs a 63-39 lead, their largest of the game.
Drew Hildreth (Memphis, Tenn./Bolton HS) scored 13 of his 15 points and grabbed six of his eight rebounds in the first half. Green scored 14, and
Ryan Fleming (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) added 13 with seven rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. Junior guard
Trey Casey (Cincinnati, Ohio/La Salle HS) was shut out for the first time since his freshman year, but he added three steals and six rebounds in 39 minutes.
Conner Blasi led the Chargers with 14 points and six rebounds, and Greg Gardner scored 12.
The Bucs shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) for the game and 47.1 percent (24-of-51) overall, while UAH was 37.8 percent (17-of-45) overall and 23.8 percent (5-of-21) from three-point range.
The Bucs advance to tomorrow's semifinal round, where they will play the top seed, No. 25 Delta State, at 5:30 p.m.
