Wistokat Named Gulf South Conference Top Ten Award Recipient

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --  Christian Brothers University cross country/track and field runner Johanna Wistokat was announced as a Gulf South Conference Top 10 Award honoree, as released by the league office on Monday, May 22.

This marks the second straight year that Wistokat has earned the honor.

Annually, the GSC and its member institutions proudly recognize the top five female and top five male student-athletes in the conference to its Top Ten. These 10 student-athletes are then eligible for the league's highest honor, the Commissioner's Trophy. This award embodies the three underlying principles emphasized by the GSC: Compete, Graduate, Impact.

CBU has now had a women's student-athlete named to the Top 10 for three straight years (Wistokat 2022-2023, Brynne Lytle, women's basketball, 2021).

Wistokat earns the honor after an unprecedented season that saw her become the first CBU cross country runner to win the Gulf South Conference Championship. She then followed it up with a victory at the NCAA South Region Championship. At the GSC Championships Wistokat earned the prestigious GSC Champion Scholar Athlete honor, which is presented at each GSC championship event to the student-athlete with the highest grade point average.

The Wennigsen, Germany native then earned All-American honors with a 30th place finish at the NCAA Championships. She recently wrapped up her outdoor season with a second place finish in the 5000 meters, crossing the line with a record-breaking time of 17.08.04. The time was 36 seconds faster than her finish last season. For her efforts, she was also named to the USTFCCCA All-Region team.

Off the track, Wistokat has an impressive eight Gulf South Conference All-Academic honors (cross country, indoor track, outdoor track). She is also a five-time CBU Buc Gold Scholar.

Wistokat also made her presence felt in the community, where she is a member of CBU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (diversity and inclusion sub committee). She also volunteered as a worker to improve green areas in Memphis, as a German teacher and has donated clothes and hygiene products to Wundertuete -  a German organization that collects products for the homeless.
