Memphis, TN. The Christian Brothers University men's cross country team turned in a strong performance at the Gulf South Conference Championships on Saturday, finishing ninth overall in a highly competitive field of 11 teams.
Junior Basile Chevrel led the way for the Buccaneers with a stellar effort, clocking a personal-best time of 24:21.04 to finish 11th overall, earning valuable points and becoming a second-team All-GSC. Chevrel's aggressive start and consistent pacing helped him secure one of the best individual finishes for CBU in recent conference championship history.
Senior Joseph Arriaga followed with a season-best run of 25:35.83, placing 41st overall in his final GSC Championship appearance. Junior Thomas Saunders and Kilian Daude each notched personal records, crossing the line in 26:53.25 and 26:57.37, respectively, to finish inside the team's scoring five. Senior James Holcombe closed out the Buccaneers' top five in 72nd place (27:02.00), helping CBU secure 227 total points and a top-10 team result.
The Buccaneers also saw strong supporting efforts from freshman Keelin Tyler (29:01.15) and sophomore Robert Richardson (29:36.99), who each recorded personal bests to cap their conference debuts.
Head Coach Bill Hoffman praised the team's improvement and unity throughout the race.
"Basile ran an outstanding race from the start. He mixed it up with the best runners in the GSC. Making All - All-Conference is a great accomplishment. He is ready to roll in two weeks at the NAA regional Championship in two weeks."
With a blend of veteran leadership and rising young talent, the Buccaneers continue to build momentum heading into the postseason. CBU will now turn its focus to the NCAA South Region Championships, where the team aims to finish its fall campaign on a strong note.
