Men's Basketball picked to finish fourth in GSC Preseason Poll

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Christian Brothers University men's basketball team was selected to finish fourth in the 2024-25 Gulf South Conference Preseason Poll after a vote by the league's head coaches. The Bucs' 15 conference wins last season set a record dating back to CBU joining the GSC in 1996-97 and their 17-11 overall record marked their best wins tally since the 2018-19 season.

Head Coach John T. Reilly enters his sixth season at the helm of the Christian Brothers men's basketball program. In 31 years as a head coach, Reilly has amassed a 520-384 (.575) career record. His 520 career victories places him 14th all-time among Division II coaches.

The Bucs return two key contributors from last season in seniors Jailen Anderson and Christian Thompson. Anderson, a guard from Jackson, Tenn., ranked 12th in the conference in scoring with 15.0 points per game. His 3.5 assists per game was the 10th-best average in the league. Meanwhile, Thompson, a forward from Lonoke, Ark., was the Gulf South's fourth-leading rebounder (7.1 rpg) and second-best blocker of shots (1.5 bpg).

CBU dominated the boards in 2023-24 and will look to do the same this season with the return of Thompson. Christian Brothers led the conference in combined team rebounds (40.1 rpg) and rebounding margin (8.9). Additionally, the Bucs' 3.5 blocked shots per game was the second-highest average in the GSC. 

CBU was equally good in both scoring offense and defense this past season, ranking fifth in the conference in both categories. The Bucs put up 78.1 points per game while limiting opponents to 72.1 points per game. Their 6.0 scoring margin ranked them fourth in the league at season's end.

Christian Brothers' 2024-25 campaign will begin in Jackson, Tenn. at the SIAC-GSC Crossover Tournament on Nov. 8th. The home opener will be a non-conference contest against Harding at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26th. The full 2024-25 schedule can be viewed here.
