ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs jumped to a 4-0 lead and held on in a 5-4 win at Ouachita Baptist Wednesday afternoon as they moved into a tie for fifth place in the Gulf South Conference standings.
Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland/Menntaskolinn vid Hamrahlid) scored the first two goals for the Lady Bucs (8-6-1, 2-2-1 GSC), finding the net in the 14th minute and again in the 24th minute, both off
Anna Laskarzewska (Edmonton, Alberta/Archbishop O'Leary) crosses.
Annelise Nevarez (Cumming, Ga./Pinecrest Academy) tacked on a third goal in the 29th minute, and the Lady Bucs took a 3-0 lead into the halftime break.
Svavarsdottir scored again in the 54th minute, her third goal of the game and her 19th of the year, assisted by Laskarzewska and
Colleen Hart (Tulsa, Okla./Cascia Hall Prep), and the Lady Bucs appeared well on their way to an easy victory.
The Lady Tigers (1-7-0, 0-7-0) clawed back into it, however, scoring three goals in a 5:26 span to cut the lead to just one. Beth Wendle opened the OBU scoring in the 61st minute, and Lauren Pierce scored in the 63rd minute, assisted by Wendle. Lyndsay Romano set up Wendle for another goal in the 67th minute, and all of a sudden the Lady Bucs' lead had been cut to a single goal.
Nevarez put it back to a two-goal cushion with a 71st-minute goal, assisted by
Marie Kvarnlof (Östersund, Sweden/Wargentins School). Pierce scored again for OBU to cut the lead back to one goal in the 79th minute, but the Lady Bucs bled the clock out without allowing Ouachita another shot.
With the win, the Lady Bucs move into a three-way tie for fifth place in the GSC standings, a point behind fourth-place Delta State for the final spot in the tournament.
The Lady Bucs continue their quest for a Gulf South Conference Tournament berth Sunday afternoon when they take on Harding at 1 p.m.
