MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs clinched their first Gulf South Conference Tournament berth since 2004 with a 2-1 win over Alabama-Huntsville Wednesday night at Signaigo Field.
The Lady Bucs (10-6-1, 4-2-1 GSC) used a pair of goals late in the first half to rally from an early deficit.
UAH (5-9-1, 2-5-1) opened the scoring in the 21st minute as Camila Cortez scored on a free kick from 25 yards out.
The Lady Bucs would answer in the 33rd minute as
Anna Laskarzewska (Edmonton, Alberta/Archbishop O'Leary) took a pass from
Annelise Nevarez (Cumming, Ga./Pinecrest Academy) at the top of the box and fired a shot past the UAH keeper for the equalizer.
Elin Svavarsdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland/Menntaskolinn vid Hamrahlid) scored her 21st goal of the year in the 36th minute as she received a long lead pass from
Marie Kvarnlof (Östersund, Sweden/Wargentins School) and scored what proved to be the game-winner.
From there, the Lady Bucs held on, with keeper
Libby Hake (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury HS) making five saves. Both teams took 10 shots, with UAH taking six shots on goal to the Lady Bucs' four.
With the win, the Lady Bucs have nine points in GSC play, one more than fourth-place Delta State, who lost 3-2 in overtime to North Alabama earlier Wednesday. No. 2 West Florida leads the GSC with 14 points, one more than Montevallo. West Georgia is in fifth place with seven points.
The Lady Bucs will host West Georgia Saturday afternoon. With a win or tie, the Lady Bucs would clinch the No. 3 seed in next weekend's GSC Tournament at Brosnaham Park in Pensacola, Fla. West Georgia would gain the No. 3 seed with a win or the No. 4 seed with a tie, while Delta State advances as the No. 4 seed if the Lady Bucs win.
CBU's Senior Day game with West Georgia is set for 1 p.m. Saturday.
