Box Score MEMPHIS—With their perimeter shooting struggling Monday night, the Christian Brothers University Buccaneers turned to center
Nick Kohs (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota East HS) to carry them against Mid-Continent, and the senior big man responded with a career-high 37 points as the Bucs won 76-62.
The Bucs (2-0) had an uncharacteristically cold night from the perimeter, shooting just 17.9 percent (5-of-28) from three-point range, but they found out quickly that the Cougars had no answer for Kohs underneath.
Kohs had 14 rebounds, five blocks, and two steals to go with his career-high 37 points in 39 minutes. He scored 26 in the second half. He shot 13-of-18 from the floor, including 9-of-10 in the second half. He made 11 of his career-high 20 free throw attempts, including 8-of-11 after the intermission.
His previous career high of 30 points came in the Bucs' NCAA Tournament loss to North Alabama in March.
As a team, the Bucs shot 60 percent (27-of-45) at the free throw line. They also struggled overall from the floor, making just 37.9 percent (22-of-58) of their shots. Their defense held MCU to just 29.9 percent (20-of-67) from the floor and 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from three-point range.
The Bucs struggled at times with the Cougars' full-court press, committing 19 turnovers, but they broke the press repeatedly, scoring most of their 22 fast-break points off the press-break offense.
Senior guard
Reggie Peyton (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) was the only other Buc in double figures with 14 points, while
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) set a career high with 10 rebounds along with eight assists.
Donovan Willis and Santez Johnson scored 17 points each for the NAIA Cougars, who played Monday night's game as an exhibition.
The Bucs will hit the road this weekend as they play in the John L. Griffin/Lions Club Classic at Northern Kentucky University. They face Cincinnati-Clermont Friday at 4:30 p.m., while they play Olivet Nazarene Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
