Lions Slug Past Bucs 12-4

Anthony Apro went 2-for-4, but the Bucs dropped their home opener 11-2 Wednesday against Freed-Hardeman.
MEMPHIS—Visiting Freed-Hardeman hit four homers as they cruised to a 12-4 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Wednesday afternoon at Buc Field.  FHU right fielder Willy Hernandez blasted three homers.

The Lions (1-0) opened the scoring in the top of the second as they capitalized on three walks, a hit batter, a wild pitch, and a single to push three runs across.  Hernandez blasted the first of his three homers an inning later to start the third inning, giving the Lions a 4-0 lead.

The Bucs (0-2) began to cut into the lead in the fifth.  Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) led off with a single, and he moved to second on a Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) single.  A wild pitch moved them to second and third before they scored on RBI groundouts by David Clayton (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and Cody Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy).

FHU stretched the lead out with three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth.  They tacked on three more in the seventh as Hernandez and Leo Alvarez hit back-to-back homers.  Hernandez hit another homer to center in the eighth to stretch the lead to 12-3.  The game was called due to darkness in the top of the ninth inning.

Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) led off the bottom of the eighth with a double, and he scored on an error after an Anthony Apro (Lexington, Ky./West Jessamine HS) single.

Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS), Kaminski, and Apro each went 2-for-4 to pace the Bucs' offense.

Hernandez and Brian Bullard collected three hits each for the Lions.

The Bucs will be back in action Thursday afternoon at Union in a makeup of Tuesday's rainout.  First pitch has been pushed back an hour to 3 p.m. due to schedule conflicts.
