MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs swept a non-conference doubleheader from Lambuth Sunday afternoon at Bland Field, winning the opener 10-4 and taking the second game 8-5.
After allowing two unearned runs in the top of the first inning in the opener, the Lady Bucs (4-2) scored seven in the bottom of the inning, their highest total since scoring eight in the fourth inning of a 13-0 win over Rhodes Apr. 14, 2004. They last scored seven Feb. 26, 2005, in a 20-12 loss at West Alabama.
The Lady Bucs had four singles and three walks the first time through the order, and
Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) blasted a triple to center to clear the bases and extend the lead to 7-2.
After Lambuth (0-3) scored a run in the second, the Lady Bucs tacked on a run in the third and two in the fifth to pull away to a 10-3 lead before Lambuth scored once in the seventh.
Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) went 3-for-3 with two runs in the game, while Mathews and
Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) each had two hits.
Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) picked up the win, striking out 10 with no walks as she threw the complete game. She allowed six hits and just one of Lambuth's four runs was earned.
Mathews kept swinging a hot bat in the second game, hitting doubles in the first two innings to help the Lady Bucs to an early lead.
Lambuth scored two in the top of the first, but after a Mathews leadoff double and two walks,
Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) hit a two-run double down the right field line to tie the game.
An inning later, the Lady Bucs' first five batters reached as they plated three runs to take the lead for good, with Mathews hitting an RBI double to score
Michelle Paul (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Summit HS), who led off with a walk. Dunn reached on a bunt single, allowing Paul to reach second to set up the Mathews double. An illegal pitch brought Dunn home, and Mathews scored the inning's final run on a
Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) bunt single.
Dunn put it out of reach in the fifth inning, blasting a two-run triple to right. She scored on a Mathews sacrifice fly, giving the Lady Bucs an 8-2 lead. Lambuth cut the margin in half with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Mathews went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI in the second game, while Dunn was 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI. King also went 2-for-2.
McFatter tossed her first complete game of the season in the second game, allowing five runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts as she evened her record at 1-1.
The Lady Bucs return to the field Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Williams Baptist in a non-conference doubleheader.
