MEMPHIS—Host Rhodes used a four-run third inning to break open a tie game on their way to an 11-2 win over the Christian Brothers University Bucs in the season opener for both schools Tuesday afternoon.
The Lynx (1-0) struck first in the bottom of the first inning. Back-to-back singles by Travis Perkins and J.R. Bizzell started the inning, and they came home on a sacrifice fly and a groundout, respectively.
The Bucs (0-1) evened the game in the third inning.
Cody Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) was hit by a pitch with one out, and
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) followed with a walk.
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) hit a two-out, two-run double to tie the game, but the Lynx scored four in the bottom of the third.
Perkins and Bizzell singled back-to-back to spark another big inning. Brent Lindsey hit an RBI single to break the tie, and the Lynx tacked on three more unearned runs, two scoring on a two-out error. They added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to blow it open as they stretched the lead out. Two more runs in the fifth set the final margin.
David Clayton (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and
Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) led the CBU offense with two hits each, while Kaminski and
Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) also singled.
Mitch Porwoll (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) struck out five as he tossed two scoreless innings in his debut, while
Justin Hopper (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) also threw a perfect inning out of the bullpen.
The Bucs have a week off before they return to the field next Tuesday afternoon at Union. The Bucs' home opener is set for Wednesday, Feb. 10, against Freed-Hardeman at 2 p.m.
