Statesmen Slug Past Bucs in Doubleheader

Josh Shelton was 1-for-3 with four walks and three runs scored, but the Bucs were swept 12-2 and 12-4 by Delta State Saturday.
CLEVELAND, Miss.—Host Delta State pounded out 25 hits in two games as they swept the Christian Brothers University Bucs 12-2 and 12-4 in a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader Saturday.

The Statesmen (18-10, 5-0 GSC West) took control quickly in the second inning, when they batted around to score four runs.  They extended the lead to 7-0 over the next two innings before the Bucs (7-15, 0-2) scored on a two-run Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) homer in the top of the sixth.

DSU scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and four in the seventh to end the game in seven.

Kaminski went 2-for-3 for the Bucs, while Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) and Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) added a single each.

In the nightcap, Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) singled and scored on a Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) base hit in the first inning.  The Statesmen, however, scored three runs in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, and five in the fifth to take a commanding 12-1 lead.

Wright hit a two-run triple in the seventh and scored on a Kaminski sacrifice fly to set the final margin at 12-4.  Wright and Britt collected two hits each for the Bucs in the nightcap, while Shelton scored twice.

The Bucs will look for their first GSC West win tomorrow afternoon as they conclude the series at Delta State.  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
