MEMPHIS—A six-run fifth inning lifted visiting Arkansas Tech to an 8-1 Gulf South Conference West Division victory over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon at Buc Field.
The Wonder Boys (17-20, 5-2 GSC West) scored quickly, with leadoff batter Austin Gwatney doubling to left to start the game. He scored on a wild pitch with one out to score the game's first run.
The Bucs (7-18, 0-4) knotted the game in the bottom of the third.
David Clayton (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) reached on an error, and a
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) groundout scored him.
The Wonder Boys blew it open in the top of the fifth, however, batting around with three doubles and four singles to score six times and take a commanding 7-1 lead. They tacked on an unearned run an inning later after an error, giving them the final 8-1 margin.
Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) led the Bucs' offense as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.
Karl Whitley tossed a complete game for the Wonder Boys, scattering six hits and two walks as he allowed one unearned run with six strikeouts.
Jeff Dove (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) made a strong appearance, allowing one unearned run in 4.1 innings. He allowed just a hit and a walk and struck out one batter.
The Bucs and Wonder Boys meet again Sunday at noon for a doubleheader.
