MEMPHIS—Visiting Arkansas Tech used two more strong pitching performances Sunday afternoon as they swept a Gulf South Conference West Division series from the Christian Brothers University Bucs, winning Sunday's doubleheader 5-0 and 6-2.
The Wonder Boys (19-20, 7-2 GSC West) struck quickly in the opener, scoring four runs on four singles and a hit batter in the top of the second inning. They scored once in the third inning, and neither team could score the rest of the way. ATU's Caleb Powers tossed a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts, only allowing singles from
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School),
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS),
Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS), and
David Clayton (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS).
Freshman
Mitch Porwoll (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield Christian HS) turned in an exceptional appearance out of the bullpen, retiring nine of 10 batters he faced, only allowing a walk as he struck out three batters.
In the nightcap, it was the Bucs (7-20, 0-6) who scored first, turning three singles and a walk into a run. Clayton tried to score from second on Shelton's two-out RBI single, but he was tagged out at the plate after a strong throw from ATU right fielder Clint Stroud, ending the inning.
ATU's Josh Holloway blasted a homer to left-center in the top of the fourth, tying the game, but the Bucs answered in the bottom of the inning.
Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) led off with a double, and he scored on a wild pitch. The Bucs kept the pressure on with a pair of two-out singles, but Stroud ended the inning again, cutting down Wilson at third as he tried to move up two bases on a Shelton single.
The Wonder Boys took control in the top of the fifth. After a walk and a hit batter to start the inning, the Bucs seemed to have survived the threat with just one run in, on a wild pitch, but Chad Wynn's infield single drove in the eventual winning run. Holloway followed with another homer, extending the lead to 5-2. Wynn hit a homer of his own in the top of the seventh to set the final margin at 6-2.
Shelton led the way for the Bucs, going 3-for-4 with a double. Wilson and Escajadillo also collected two hits each.
The Bucs will return to the field Monday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host Union.
