MEMPHIS—Visiting Union scored six runs in the top of the 10th inning to spoil a five-run ninth-inning comeback by the Christian Brothers University Bucs Monday afternoon as they won 16-10 in a wild 10-inning game that saw the offenses bat around in three straight half-innings.
The Bulldogs (19-10) opened the scoring in the top of the first as Alex Turner homered to center with one out. The Bucs (7-21) answered quickly with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Caleb Burrow (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) drew a leadoff walk, and he scored on a
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) double.
Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) hit a two-out single through the left side to give the Bucs a 2-1 lead.
That margin held until the sixth inning, when the game changed to a wild slugfest after five innings as a pitcher's duel. In the top of the sixth, the Bulldogs started the inning with four straight infield singles. After an error and another single, Union had pushed three runs across.
The Bucs answered with three runs of their own to retake the lead in the bottom of the inning, with two singles, two walks, and a hit batter bringing three runs across the plate.
Union answered with a run in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 7-5 lead, and they seemingly put the game away when they batted around in the top of the ninth, scoring three runs on two hits, three errors, two walks, and a hit batter to take a 10-5 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
The Bucs, trailing by five runs going to the ninth, started the inning well when Shelton blasted a leadoff homer to center. After
Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was hit by a pitch,
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) hit a double to the gap in left-center, putting runners on second and third, but the threat seemed over after a popout and an Escajadillo RBI groundout. But
Ryan McCabe (Richmond, Texas/B.F. Terry HS) was hit by a 1-2 pitch to keep the inning alive, and a wild pitch and RBI singles by
Thomas Turner (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and
Will Wilson (Cordova, Tenn./First Assembly Christian School) knotted the game at 10. Shelton nearly provided the game-winner, but a diving stop at third base by David Maristany ended the inning and sent the game on to the 10th.
In the top of the 10th, the Bucs' pitching struggled to find the strike zone, with six walks, three wild pitches, a balk, and a single leading to six runs to break the tie.
The Bucs tried to mount a two-out rally, with back-to-back singles from
Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) and Escajadillo, but Union's Dan Beck struck out Arroyo to end the three-hour, 48-minute game.
Escajadillo finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI. Shelton was 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while Kaminski went 2-for-5 with two runs.
