No. 4 Muleriders Sweep Bucs

Josh Shelton went 5-for-9 in the doubleheader, but the Bucs lost 19-6 and 29-2 to No. 4 Southern Arkansas Friday afternoon.
MEMPHIS—No. 4 Southern Arkansas pounded out 42 hits, scoring 48 runs as they rolled to a doubleheader sweep of the Christian Brothers University Bucs Friday afternoon at a cool, cloudy Buc Field as they remained in sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference West Division, winning the opener 19-6 and taking the nightcap 29-2.

The Muleriders (35-7, 13-1 GSC West) set the tone quickly, scoring twice in the top of the opening game's first inning.  In fact, the Muleriders scored in all eight innings of the opener and 13 of the game's 15 innings.  They blew the first game open with two runs in the second, one in the third, and four in the fourth to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

The Bucs (8-27, 0-11) had scored their first run in the bottom of the second when Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) blasted a solo homer against the wind to right field.  The Bucs threatened to make a game of it in the fifth and sixth innings.  In the fifth, they scored twice on three hits and an error, and they turned two hits, two walks, and a hit batter into three runs in the sixth inning, closing the Mulerider lead to 11-6.

The Muleriders put it away in the next two innings, scoring three in the seventh and five in the eighth to win 19-6.

Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) went 3-for-5 with two RBI's, while Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) and Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) collected two hits each.

In the nightcap, it was the Bucs who jumped out to an early lead.  Escajadillo led off the bottom of the first with a single, and he moved to second on an Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) single to center.  Kaminski hit an RBI single up the middle to score Escajadillo, and Wright scored on a Britt sacrifice fly to give the Bucs an early 2-0 lead.

After scoring once in the second, the Mulerider bats woke up, scoring eight in the third and 13 in the fourth to take a commanding 22-2 lead.  They tacked on three more in the fifth and four in the sixth to set the final margin.

Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) went 2-for-4 in the second game, while Matt Stephany (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was 2-for-3.

The Bucs return to the field tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for their Senior Day game against the Muleriders.  The Bucs will honor seniors Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS), Dave Delugach (Hernando, Miss./Memphis University School), Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS), Andrew Searcy (Adamsville, Tenn./Adamsville HS), and Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) in pregame ceremonies beginning at 12:45 p.m.
