ARKADELPHIA, Ark.—After waiting out a rain delay of four hours and 21 minutes, host Henderson State rallied for a 7-5 Gulf South Conference West Division victory over the Christian Brothers University Bucs Saturday afternoon.
The Bucs (9-30, 0-13 GSC West) had built a 5-3 lead with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning when rain moved into the area, but the Reddies (31-13, 7-9) out-scored the Bucs 4-0 after play resumed as reliever Evan Eary threw four hitless innings with six strikeouts against three walks as he earned the victory.
The Bucs had used the long ball to build the early lead.
Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) hit a two-out homer in the top of the first inning, his first homer in a CBU uniform. The Reddies answered in the bottom half of the inning as Grant Dennis tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly, and John Waylock's second-inning solo homer lifted HSU to a 2-1 lead.
The Bucs reclaimed the lead in the third inning.
Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) doubled to lead off the inning, and he scored on a two-out
Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) double. A batter later,
Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) blasted his third homer of this week to give the Bucs a 4-2 lead.
The Reddies scored with a run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead, and Kaminski launched a homer of his own, his team-high seventh of the year, in the top of the fifth.
After the rain, CBU starter Ryan McCabe, who had tossed four and a third innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and a walk, was unable to contunue after the long delay.
The Reddies scored an unearned run in the fifth and two unearned runs in the sixth to retake the lead for good, and they tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning.
Kaminski, Shelton, and
Thomas Turner (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) collected two hits each for the Bucs.
The Bucs and Reddies meet again Sunday at noon for a doubleheader.
