Dunn Narrowly Misses Perfection Again

Nikki Dunn threw a one-hit shutout, coming within two outs of her second perfect game as the Lady Bucs split a doubleheader at Lambuth Wednesday.
JACKSON, Tenn.—For the thrd time in her last six starts, Christian Brothers University senior pitcher Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss., Southaven HS) narrowly missed a perfect game as the Lady Bucs split a doubleheader at Lambuth Wednesday evening, winning the opener 6-0 but falling 6-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Dunn (15-11) mowed down the Lady Eagles' first 19 batters before Lindsey Akin broke up the perfect game and the no-hitter with a one-out double in the seventh inning.  Dunn carried a perfect game into the 10th against Arkansas-Monticello April 11, and she no-hit Williams Baptist with just one batter reaching by error April 14.

The Lady Bucs (19-23) gave Dunn all run support she needed in the first inning as Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) hit a leadoff double and scored on an Alyse Brewer (Florence, Ala./Florence HS) single.  The Lady Bucs plated four in the second inning, with a two-run single by Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) and a two-run double from Dunn.  King swatted a solo homer in the fourth to set the final margin.

King, Dunn, and Mathews collected two hits each in the opener.

In the nightcap, Lambuth capitalized on CBU mistakes, scoring three unearned runs in a 6-1 game.

In the bottom of the first, a one-out error allowed two runs to score, and a pair of errors led to Lambuth's final run in the fifth.  In between, they turned three singles into a run in the second and followed that with a two-run third inning, also built on three singles.

The Lady Bucs cut a run off the final margin in the sixth as Brooke Davis (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) doubled and scored on a Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) single.  McFatter and Davis each went 2-for-3, while Mathews went 2-for-4.

The Lady Bucs come home this weekend for a four-game set with Ouachita Baptist.  The Lady Bucs enter the weekend 7-17 in GSC play, three games behind OBU (22-27, 10-16) for the fourth and final berth in the GSC Tournament, which will be played May 1-3 at Greenbrook Park in Southaven.

The Lady Bucs also have two road games with Arkansas Tech that will be made up if they could impact the seedings of the GSC Tournament.
