Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Bucs used an 11-0 run late in the second half to regain control on their way to a 58-51 Gulf South Conference West Division win over Ouachita Baptist Thursday night at Canale Arena.
The Bucs (11-4, 1-1 GSC West) had led throughout the first half, but a 22-9 OBU (4-11, 0-2) run spanning 10:25 of the second half gave the Tigers a 42-38 lead with 8:01 remaining.
Just as they did Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello, the Bucs turned to
Kevin Doran (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) to kick-start the run to answer, as Doran buried a three-pointer to pull within one.
Scott Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) found
Kyle Couvion (Dayton, Ohio/Centerville HS) for a back-door layup to give CBU the lead for good on their next possession. Dennis capped the 11-0 run with a fast-break dunk and a put-back layup to give the Bucs a 49-42 lead with 4:13 remaining.
From there, the Bucs made nine free throws to keep the Tigers at bay and protect the victory.
Warner led the Bucs with 18 points, while Dennis turned in his fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Doran scored 13 points off the bench, while
Michael Drake (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) scored 10 points before fouling out in 23 minutes.
Scott Day led the Tigers with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Julian LeDay had 11 points. Belford Williams blocked a game-high five shots to go with nine points.
The Bucs won despite a cold shooting night as they were just 36.4 percent (16-of-44) from the floor. They shot 32 percent (8-of-25) from three-point range and 72 percent (18-of-25) at the free throw line, while OBU shot 40.9 percent (18-of-44) from the floor. The Bucs out-rebounded OBU 33-25, including a 12-7 margin in offensive rebounds, but CBU committed 14 turnovers while forcing 11.
The Bucs' next two games are on the road as they visit Delta State Saturday night at 6 p.m. and travel to Harding Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. The Bucs come home Saturday, Jan. 23, to face Henderson State at 4 p.m.
